ICD-10-CM Coding Guidelines - Injury, Poisoning, and Certain other Consequences of External Causes (Chapter 19)


Chapter 19 of ICD-10-CM is titled "Injury, Poisoning, and Certain Other Consequences of External Causes," which includes categories S00-T98. Injury is damage or a wound that affects the structure and function of a body part. Injuries include falls, motor vehicle accidents, drowning, and hazards in the workplace. These events result in bruises, burns, sprains, wounds, concussions, and shock. 
  • S00-S09 Injuries to the Head – Codes in this subsection correspond with those in categories 800-925 in ICD-9-CM. Conditions include injuries of the ear, eye, gum, jaw, oral cavity, palate, scalp, face, TMJ area, tongue, and tooth.

  • S10-S19 Injuries to the Neck - Codes in this subsection correspond with those in categories 805-925 in ICD-9-CM. Conditions include various injuries to the neck region, including blood vessels, muscle, fascia, tendon, and skin.

  • S20-S29 Injuries to the Thorax - Codes in this subsection correspond with those in categories 305-926 in ICD-9-CM. Conditions include superficial injuries, open wounds, fractures, and injuries to the nerves, blood vessels, skin, and heart.

  • S30-S39 Injuries to the Abdomen, Lower Back, Lumbar Spine, Pelvis, and External Genitals - Codes in this subsection correspond with those in categories 805-926 in ICD-9-CM. Conditions include various injuries to the middle body region.

  • S40-S49 Injuries to the Shoulder and Upper Arm - Codes in this subsection correspond with those in categories 813-927 in ICD-9-CM. Conditions include various injuries to the shoulder or upper arm fascia, muscle, blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and skin.

General Guidelines

  • Most of the codes in this subsection require a seventh character and have three extension options: A, initial encounter, D, subsequent encounter, and S, sequalae.

  • Code T14.90 is only used when there is no documentation to identify specific injuries, and it should not be used in the inpatient setting.

  • Codes in categories T26-T28 also require an additional external cause code to identify the place, source, and intent of the burn.

  • When reporting with categories T36-T50, if the underdosing occurs due to noncompliance, a secondary code from the Z91.1, Patient's noncompliance with medical treatment, should be used.
