Helen Mack has been a sewing instructor for 34 years; 18 years in a technical school (adult recreation) and she's currently a private instructor. She thoroughly enjoys interacting with students and watching them progress as they learn to sew. Essential sewing basics will be presented to students who are just learning to sew or are refreshing skills. This course does require the use of a sewing machine along with the ability to thread sewing machine, thread bobbin, adjust stitch tension, sew forward, reverse and zig-zag stitches.

You will learn how to straighten and block fabric and proper pressing techniques which are first and foremost in constructing garments and you will learn the different seam finishes required to neaten seams. You will learn to use commercial patterns in child's size to perfect your techniques. In addition you will learn the under construction that is necessary to give garments that professional appearance.

Course Description

Basic sewing is an introduction to sewing techniques beginning with fabric preparation and constructing garments using commercial patterns. The basic skills you will learn in this course will be utilized in your own garment sewing projects.

 

You will learn how to straighten and block fabric and proper pressing techniques which are first and foremost in constructing garments and you will learn the different seam finishes required to neaten seams. You will learn to use commercial patterns in child's size to perfect your techniques. In addition you will learn the under construction that is necessary to give garments that professional appearance.

Lesson 1: Basic Sewing 1 - Preparing the Fabric

Preparing fabric and constructing seam finishes strip.

Lesson 2: Basic Sewing 2 - Seam Finishes

Proper pressing of seams, constructing seam finishes labelling each seam finish.

Lesson 3: Basic Sewing 3 - Learning Constructing Techniques

Modifying commercial pattern, cutting, marking and constructing facings.

Lesson 4: Basic Sewing 4 - Constructing the Front and the Back

Constructing Top front and back and attaching facings.

Lesson 5: Basic Sewing 5 - Back Opening

Constructing loop for back neck opening and attaching loop, finishing back seam.

Lesson 6: Basic Sewing 6 - Sleeve Construction

Sleeve construction, attaching sleeve, stitching side seam and sleeve seam all in one step, constructing cuffs, hemming bottom of Top.

Lesson 7: Basic Sewing 7 - Shorts/Skirt Construction

Shorts/Skirt construction. A knit garment utilizig different straightening, stitching techniques unique to knits.

Lesson 8: Basic Sewing 8 - Completing Shorts/Skirt

Completing Shorts/Skirt. Stitching center back/front seam in one step, constructing casing for elastic, inserting elastic, identifying back of garment.
