Students will begin their journey into rag quilting with an examination of the popularity of this trendy quilting technique. This is followed by an exploration of the world of popular polar fleece fabrics. Students will then dive into their project by determining the type and size of quilt they wish to make as well as identifying and assembling all needed supplies. Participants will also explore fabric combinations that will make a great statement and they will then get into the thick of things by setting up the sewing machine, cutting, matching and sewing their fabric squares and preparing them for more assembly. Students will learn tips for staying organized, sewing rows and applying the finishing touch to their one-of-a-kind blanket creation. Lessons, assignments, polls, tests, forums, "virtual handholding" and a fun, supportive, caring learning environment will support students through to a successfully completed project.
Instructor Kathleen Jones has been a polar fleece aficionado for the last five years, She is delighted to share with you her expertise and interest. Her past polar fleece projects have included: balaclavas, boas, jester hats, blankets, and "rag style" quilts. As an experienced educator, trainer, human service provider, community volunteer, and webmaster, Kathleen is committed to providing you a supportive online learning environment and guiding you through to a successful project. From fabric selection to sewing strategies, we'll virtually hold your hand through every step to ensure a successful quilting project. Beware...polar fleece rag quilts are habit forming. As an added bonus, you will also learn the techniques needed to make a traditional cotton rag quilt as well. Beginner sewers as well as experienced quilters who welcome a break from intricate work will love this project.Once materials are assembled, rag quilts can be completed in a weekend. Upon completion of this self-paced course, students will create a unique rag quilt blanket suitable for gift giving, selling at a craft fair, or relaxing with at home.
