The primary goal of this course is to help you learn enough about CNC turning center setup and operation so that you can secure an entry level position with a CNC-using company. If you're already working for a CNC using company, the secondary goal is to increase your level of knowledge about CNC turning center usage. If you're currently working as a CNC operator (not setting up machines), this course will show you what it takes to step into a setup person's position. Special requirement: Note that you need to have two software viewers (Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer and Adobe Acrobat Reader) installed on your computer before you can view material presented in the lessons. Both of these viewers are freely distributed and can be downloaded from our website (www.cncci.com). From the navigation buttons on our website, click SERVICES and then click ON-LINE COURSES. Course Description

This class will present the concepts related to turning center setup and operation. CNC turning centers are among the most popular metal-cutting machine tools in use today. Most companies that manufactures any metal products have more than one - and is constantly searching for qualified people to run them. To fully master the use of a CNC turning center, a person must become proficient in three distinct skills - programming, setup, and completing production runs. This class addresses two of the three; setting up a machining center and how to complete a production run (another class is available for helping you learn CNC turning center programming).

The two viewers can be found at the bottom of this page.

Course Lessons

  1. Tasks Related to Setup and Operation - You must know what the tasks related to setup and operation are before you can begin studying them. This lesson simply introduces the various tasks. Future lessons will cover specific tasks in greater detail.
  2. Machine Configurations - Setup people and operators must understand the basic make-up of the machine/s they work on. Included: machine components, directions of motion (axes), and important programmable functions.
  3. Workholding Setup - You must understand how workholding setups are made on turning centers. Topics include types of workholding devices, the machine's spindle nose, working with three jaw chucks, and machining soft jaws.
  4. Cutting Tools - There are several types of cutting tools used on turning centers. Setup people must be able to perform the related tasks to gather components, assemble cutting tools, load them into the turret, and assign program zero.
  5. Running the First Workpiece - CNC setup people must be able to ensure that the first workpiece being machined is a good one. Included: Loading the program, safety priorities, verifying the correctness of the program, and considering what each tool will do.
  6. Completing a Production Run - Once a setup is completed and the first workpiece passes inspection, the CNC operator must complete the production run. Included: Program optimizing, workpiece load/unload, sizing workpieces, dull tool replacement.
