Course Description One of the three great monotheistic faiths of the world, Islam is a system of belief held by nearly one billion people on virtually every continent across the globe. Beginning in Arabia over fifteen hundred years ago, Islam was founded by Muhammad, who claimed to receive special revelation from Allah (God) regarding the world's one true religion. Over the following hundreds of years, Islam has slowly grown and had periodic clashes with other cultures and religions along the way, most notably the other two major monotheistic religions, Christianity and Judaism. In recent years, the religion of Islam has become known primarily for an escalation of terrorist acts carried out by various practitioners of the faith. Although there is strong debate regarding the role of terror within the teachings of Islam, there can be no denying that in recent years this aspect of the religion has taken center stage for non-Muslims worldwide. This course will attempt to provide an overview of Islam, its history, major teachings, rituals, attitudes, sects within the religion, and its relations with other cultures and faiths, among other topics, in order to provide a well-rounded introduction to one of the most influential ways of life on Earth.
