Syllabus for 204:  Effective and Significant Approaches

Course Description:

 

This course presents educational approaches that are effective in establishing high rates of learning, building self-regulation skills, and increasing prospects for self-determination for children and youth with autism spectrum disorders.

 

Course Goals:

 

By the end of the course, the student will demonstrate knowledge and skills related to:

 

A. Applied Behavior Analysis Instruction (Early speaker behavior, curriculum for establishing listener repertoires, behavior increase and decrease principles, measurement, and teachers as scientific decision makers)

B.  Self-Regulation (Assessment, monitoring adaptive responding and teaching choice-making and problems solving)

C.  Self-Determination (Definition, assessment, instruction, opportunities for self-determination and encouraging self-determination in daily living) 

 

 

General Course Requirements: 

 

1.      Read all lecture presentations and internet information.  Readings provided on the internet will supplement, not duplicate course lectures.

2.      Tests.  Complete 3 final examinations.  The tests will assess your knowledge of information from lectures and readings.  The student is responsible for all lecture and reading information, as any of this material may be included on the test.

3.      Online Assignments.  In addition to the final examinations, various online assignments must be completed. 

 

Reading Materials:

           

            Specific readings will be provided after some of the lecture presentations.  Students are responsible for linking onto the particular website and obtaining the information requested.

 

Grading Policy:

 

1.      All assignments are due on the specified due date.

2.      If an assignment is late due to an "excused" absence, it is due the next day (or on a date arranged with the professor). If it is not turned in, the student will not be allowed to advance to the next assignment and complete the requirements for the course. 

3.      Exams and online assignments may not be made up unless an excused absence is granted, and prior arrangements have been made to take the exam or complete the activity at another time. 

 

GRADING: Across 3 Units

 

 

90-100% of points =    A

80-89% of points =      B

70-79% of points =      C

60-69% of points =      D

59 or below =              F

 

  •         The instructor reserves the right to change course requirements or course schedule as deemed necessary.  The final grade and its determination (based on completion of all requirements) is the purview of the instructor.

    • Demonstrate mastery of lesson content at levels of 70% or higher.
