Course Description
Have you ever wondered why the American Healthcare system is like it is? We evolved in a unique way based on many factors. This course will show you how and why. When the first ships landed on this continent and colonization of America began, health services consisted only of what was brought along. This included medicine and supplies, physicians or those familiar with medicine, and ideas brought from the mother country. Resources found in America, including plants and American Indian medicine were combined with the resources brought by ship, to form our health care system. From these humble beginnings our health care system has developed into one of the largest and most advanced in the world. This period of about 400 years, begins in 1607 when the first English settlement was established in Jamestown, Virginia.
Both healthcare professions and adults not working in healthcare will be interested in how their healthcare system formed and developed as unique and different from the European system. Understanding the history of our healthcare system is necessary in order to change the system and make it more equitable for all Americans.
