Course Description

Relationships are complicated. Love and companionship are wonderful things, but they can also be challenging. Just like a garden, relationships need attention, respect, focus and work. When a baby enters the picture, the couple changes into a family.

This transformation and the birthing of a mother and a father role can cause a multitude of issues that couples must be ready for to offer the best strength and stability for their relationship.  Relationship Management I discusses the emotional ups and downs a couple goes through in the early stages of parenthood, including conception, pregnancy and birth. 

Course Requirements

This course is designed for adults over 18 (due to sexual references ) in a serious relationship.

Before beginning this class, I ask that you have the following:

* open communication with one's spouse or significant other

* honesty

* compassion

* understanding

* openness

** genuine interest in building and keeping a strong family relationship **

Course Materials

The following books are recommended:

Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps: How We're Different and What to Do About It by Allan Pease, Barbara Pease, and Trevor Dolby

What Women Want Men to Know by Barbara De Angelis

Grading Policy

This is a self-paced course that consists of 5 lessons. Each lesson should take approximately a week. At the end of each lesson there will be questions to answer. Each lesson is graded on 100% scale.
There will be 2 tests- 1 midterm and 1 final. Each test is graded on a 100% scale.
Class participation including active responses and questions are encouraged.
Extra credit assignments can be requested if the student feels it is necessary for further understanding of the subject matter or increase of a low grade.

about the instructor

Jill Chasse, MSpsy has been helping couples before, during, and after parenthood since 1996. She is certified in relationship counseling as well as pregnancy counseling and depression. As an instructor for childbirth education classes, she has helped many couples understand what the addition of a baby means for the relationship and has helped many couples work through these changes.
Mrs. Chasse has been a mentor for adolescents in abusive relationships, the mediator for couple grief counseling support groups, and has completed studies and research papers on relationships, including "The Labyrinth of Love," in 1999.

Learning Outcomes

By successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  • Describe the relationship.
  • Define conception.
  • Describe pregnancy.
  • Describe the birth and new baby.
  • Recognize abuse and summarize healing processes, and
  • Demonstrate mastery of lesson content at levels of 70% or higher.
