Course Description
Learn how to make a rag quilt blanket. If you can sew a straight line you can learn to make a trendy one-of-a-kind blanket for yourself or a loved one. We've combined the rag quilt design so popular in flannel and homespun fabrics with the exceptional warmth, comfort and durability of today's polar fleece fabrics. A winning combination! From fabric selection to sewing strategies, we'll virtually hold your hand through every step to ensure a successful quilting project. Beware...polar fleece rag quilts are habit forming.
As an added bonus, you will also learn the techniques needed to make a traditional cotton rag quilt as well. Beginner sewers as well as experienced quilters who welcome a break from intricate work will love this project.Once materials are assembled, rag quilts can be completed in a weekend. Upon completion of this self-paced course, students will create a unique rag quilt blanket suitable for gift giving, selling at a craft fair, or relaxing with at home. Course Requirements/Materials
Student must own or have access to a home sewing machine. Basic cutting and sewing skills are required. Sewing skills need not be elaborate as student will only sew straight seams and pivot at corners when needed.
Students need ample yardage of polar fleece fabrics to complete their desired size quilt. Cotton fabric yardage will be necessary if the student is completing a traditional rag quilt. The following notions are also needed to complete a successful project:
Glass head straight pins (long)
Good quality polyester thread to match project
Sharp sewing scissors (spring-loaded preferred)
Good quality sewing machine needles (90/14 and 100/16) universal
Square plastic quilter's template (9.5 inches). (Omnigrid/clear plexiglass)Other templates in same or similar size are acceptable.
Rotary cutter and mat
No books or other materials are necessary. Students need to have a fun spirit, flexibility, and the motivation to complete the project.
Course Goals
Students will learn fabric selection, project design and organization, and cutting and sewing skills necessary to complete a well-constructed rag quilt.
Course Organization
Students will begin their journey into rag quilting with an examination of the popularity of this trendy quilting technique. This is followed by an exploration of the world of popular polar fleece fabrics. Students will then dive into their project by determining the type and size of quilt they wish to make as well as identifying and assembling all needed supplies. We'll also explore fabric combinations that will make a great statement. Students will then get into the thick of things by setting up the sewing machine, cutting, matching and sewing their fabric squares and preparing them for more assembly. Students will learn tips for staying organized, sewing rows and applying the finishing touch to their one-of-a-kind blanket creation. Lessons, assignments, polls, tests, forums, "virtual handholding" and a fun, supportive, caring learning environment will support students through to a successfully completed project.
Grading/Certificate Policy
This is a pass/fail course designed for your sewing and crafting enjoyment and is self paced. Completing your project is necessary to pass the class. Individuals interested in obtaining certificates will need to achieve specific standards as outlined for each certificate.
The certificate policy is as follows: Certificate of Attendance for visiting this class at least 6 days.
Certificate of Academic Excellence for achieving a grade of 80% or better (tests and assignments).
Certificate of Class Participation for posting at least 5 messages in the Class Discussion Forums.
Certificate of Appreciation for completing all assignments in the class.
Certificate of Merit for completing all lessons in the class.
Certificate of Outstanding Achievement for completing all assignments and lessons in the class. In addition, students need to submit a picture of their completed project in order to obtain this certificate.
