Course Description

This class will focus on learning English to be able to communicate in common everyday situations with a person from the United States. Students who wish to sound more natural with their English and want to be able to use and understand colloquial expressions should sign up to practice their English. The goal of the class is to help get the students past the point of using only formal book learned English in their conversations. Enrolled students will have access to language exercises on target vocabulary and expressions, optional opportunities to chat with instructor, feedback on homework and tests, and numerous language learning tips from an expert. Only students who have some familiarity with English and English grammar (i.e. previous ESL classes or experience speaking English) should enroll in this course.

Course Requirements

Students must have some previous knowledge of English to be successful in this class. This could mean two to three years of previous ESL classes or a few years of English speaking practice with native speakers. I am focusing on colloquial expressions that are used in everyday situations in the United States. Students should already be familiar with basic English grammar and vocabulary.

Course Goals

The goal of this course is that the student finish each unit feeling that they can speak and understand a typical American when they are talking about something that pertains to the focus of the unit. For example, after the unit on shopping students should feel comfortable asking for something in the store and speaking with the cashier who checks them out. Students should strive for a 90% or higher on the quizzes to feel that they have mastered some colloquial American English in the area that the unit focuses on.

Course Materials

Students will not need extra materials for this course except for an English dictionary. Students will be asked to do some work on the internet to check for "real life" uses of the target vocabulary in the lessons.

Grading Policy

The grade you receive for each lesson will be out of 100 points. Quizzes will consist of 20 multiple choice and fill in the blank type questions (4 points each). The remaining 20 points will come from your completion of your exercises. There are 5 exercises so each one is worth 4 points. So after completing the class (completing 5 lessons) your grade will be out of 500 points.

Class Schedule

The class is broken into five specific topics or situations that a typical person living in the US would encounter and need to know how to communicate.

WEEK 1 Shopping at an American supermarket Vocabulary and Expressions
WEEK 2 Eating at an American Restaurant Vocabulary and Expressions
WEEK 3 College Campus Vocabulary and Expressions
