Course Description

Paris: A Rainy Day by Gustave Caillebotte, 1877


Do you enjoy paintings by the French Impressionists, but would like to understand them better? In this eight-week course you'll learn about the culture, style, painters, and major works of the Impressionist movement. Explore the lives and paintings of Manet, Sisley, Pissaro, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cassatt, and Morisot. Visit the websites of museums around the world, observe Impressionist works, and write your responses to them. Let this class expand your knowledge and appreciation of this beloved art style.

Course Requirements

There are no prerequisites for this course. You do not need previous art history classes, and you'll learn the necessary art terms as you study. You'll be visiting museum and other websites on the Internet, so your computer needs to handle this, and copying large art files. This class is about enjoying the Impressionists, even if you know nothing about them when you begin!

 

Course Goals

1. To understand the cultural influences that created the Impressionist movement.

2. To identify the characteristics of Impressionist painting.

3. To explore the lives and works of major Impressionist painters.

4. To outline the major events and exhibits that characterized the Impressionist movement.

5. To articulate personal responses to Impressionist works.

Course Materials

The text for this course is required. It is Impressionism: Origins, Practice, Reception by Belinda Thomson. Published by Thames and Hudson, copyright 2000. You can find it on Amazon.com and other sites on the Internet. If you purchase the book at a discount site like Half.com, be sure to obtain the edition published in 2000.

Grading Policy

 Each lesson will include a written assignment and review quiz that will highlight aspects of each lesson for you to note. Students will successfully complete this course with 70% or better.
