Course Description
The ICD-9-CM coding system is used by physicians, hospitals, and medical equipment suppliers to describe patient conditions on insurance claims. ICD-9-CM codes are updated annually and are effective as of October 1st of the prior year for the following corresponding years' material.
Understanding coding systems is important because codes allow the physician to bill for services that were rendered. Correct assignment of codes is also vital to all parties because it provides a centralized system that ensures accurate payment for medical services.
Identification of and payment for medical supplies and services depends upon the use of specific coding systems that help identify patient diagnoses, services, and procedures.
Assignment of the correct code leads to fewer denials on physician reimbursement by the insurance carrier.
The demand for medical coders is on the rise, as is the pay.
The student is provided with detailed information on coding the neoplasm. Because not all codes are located in the Neoplasm Table, coding tips are provided for successful code assignment. Many coding scenarios are provided to enhance the student's skills when looking up codes from the Neoplasm Table. Course Requirements
This self-paced class provides material for students with prior coding knowledge using the ICD-9-CM Coding Manual. The student is required to use the ICD-9-CM coding Manual (see reading materials).
Prior medical terminology knowledge is helpful, but not necessary.
Course Goals
- Review medical terminology in relation to Neoplasms.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of ICD-9-CM coding techniques.
- Understand the alphabetic and tabular structures of Volumes 1 and 2 of the ICD-9 book, with emphasis on the Neoplasm Table.
- The student will be able to look up codes and learn the process of using coding books when coding the neoplasm.
- Identify both primary and principal diagnoses in regards to neoplasms.
- At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to correctly sequence codes and have thorough understanding and knowledge when coding a neoplasm.
Course Materials Required
ICD-9-CM Coding Manual. The student may use the manuals for the year 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 but I highly recommend using the current manual (2010).
The use of a Medical Dictionary is required for some of the assignments. Grading Policy
At the end of this course, the student must complete the coding answer quiz which consists of 100 coding assignments. The student must score 70% in two attempts in order to pass this course. All other tests and assignments are necessary prior to taking the coding answer quiz, but scores do not affect the final grade.
