Course Description

One of the most profound effects of Marshall McLuhans' description of the world as a "global village" was its effects on human rights' activities. Today, with technology, most international human rights organizations have branches and affiliates all over the world and can therefore easily monitor human rights' violations.

The world as presently constituted, therefore, provides an opportunity to get educated about one's basic rights and the events that shape history in different parts of the world.

This course provides a general overview of international human rights and a thorough knowledge of fundamental human rights. It also discusses the role of international pressure groups and international courts and tribunals in observing and enforcing human rights.

Lesson One and Two traces the philosophical background and types of human rights. Lesson Three focuses on "the engine" on which human rights operate - The Rule of Law, while Lesson Four examines how international human rights organizations mould public opinion and ensure observance of international human rights covenants. The course ends with the analysis of high profile cases of Senator Pinochet of Chile, Slobodan Milosevic of former Yugoslavia and Charles Taylor of Liberia - all former Heads of State.

This course is meant for undergraduates and graduate students taking human rights courses and anyone seeking a career or an update on human rights. It will aid them in understanding the dialectics involved in human rights practice in the world, in addition to equipping them with current information on human rights' activities.
