Course Description
This self-paced online course provides an in-depth look at horse coat color genetics. Students will learn how to identify coat colors, patterns and markings. The science behind each color will reveal how each color/pattern is transmitted from parents to offspring. Students enrolled in this class with have the unique opportunity to learn how to predict the color of potential foals.
Course Requirements
Due to the scientific content of this class students must posses a high school reading and writing competency. All written materials are provided for students upon enrollment. It is recommended to have a writing utensil and a notebook on hand as some assignments, tests, and lessons afford the opportunity to sketch genetic sequences and punent squares. Some students will find it beneficial to be able to print the lessons for reference when completing assignments. There are several pictures included in this class to help students visualize coat color and patterns. A computer with adequate graphic imagining is recommended. There is no need to have access to live horses or a prior knowledge of them.
Course Goals
The goals of the instructor are:
1. To provide students with an easy to navigate on-line environment in which to learn
2. To give students access to genetic information and recent studies on equine coat color genetics
3. To help each student, individually, with their learning goals and genetic questions.
It is the goal of the students to:
1. Posses a well-rounded knowledge of equine coat color genetics
2. Be able to correctly identify coat colors, patterns and markings.
3. Be able to predict the color outcome of foals from given matings.
Course Materials
All course materials are provided in this class. There is no need to buy additional resources. A suggested reading list is provided as well as links to free published sources.
Grading Policy
All assignments unless otherwise noted are graded on completeness, accuracy, spelling and grammar. All attempts will be made by the instructor to grade assignments in a timely manner. All assignments, including tests, can be corrected and re-submitted for a higher grade after consultation with the instructor.

This class does not qualify a student for credit in other universities or educational systems. It is also necessary to note that horses are dangerous and any dealings with them should be made by a knowledgeable horse person.
