This course provides a striking balance between instructions on how to make dumplings, and an insightful understanding of the powerful symbols this cuisine represents in China's history. Simple, delicious and healthy recipes are provided along with an interesting historical perspective on the cultural importance each dumpling shape represents. You will not only learn how to make some appetizing delicacies for friends and family, but will also enhance personal enjoyment by understanding the significance each masterpiece you create symbolizes.

Course Requirements

      To take the course of "The Cultural Background of Chinese Dumplings and Its Making Process", individuals must have the following basic abilities:
      1). Being able to read English as the course in totally in English.
      2). Knowing how use the facilities in the kitchen.
 

Course Goals

      This course is mainly designed for people who want to know Chinese culture or Chinese dumplings.
      The general course goals include:
      1). To help students understand Chinese cuisine culture related to Chinese dumplings.
      2).  To help students understand the detail process of making more than 20 kinds of Chinese dumplings.

Course Materials

      All reading materials will be provided through class netlinks or uploaded documents. Generally in two forms:
      1. Words Narration
      2. Pictures describing the detail process
 

Grading Policy

      As this is a course mainly for people who want to cook Chinese dumplings. The main purpose of it is to help more and more people understand Chinese culture through contacting Chinese dumplings. Students will not be graded.

Chinese Dumplings

2600 years ago, when western hemisphere was in ancient Greece time, Chinese people who lived on eastern hemisphere begun to make Chinese dumplings. For 2600 years, Chinese people blended their understanding of the nature, their understanding of happiness, and their best wishes to their family members into the process of making Chinese dumplings. As a result, Chinese dumplings became a kind of gourmet food which contains the most abundant cultural meaning in the world.  Modernists who want to understand Chinese history and psychology of Chinese people will have to know about Chinese dumplings.
