Course Description
This course is designed to give students a more advanced look at hoof care. The emphasis of this particular course is the identification and treatment of various lamenesses in horses. Students enrolled in this course will be given the opportunity to learn how anatomy and development contribute to the making of sound horses. Structural abnormalities and gait patterns will be dissected. Lameness conditions in the hoof, lower leg and joints will be discussed in detail. The treatment options and farrier considerations, including an explanation of specialty shoes, for each lameness will be taught.
Course Requirements
This course is designed for a high school or better reading, comprehension and writing level. All course materials are provided and no live horses or tools are required in order to participate. A high speed internet connection with good graphics quality will help you to view the pictures and graphics but is not required. A suggested reading list is provided for those students who wish to augment their learning. This course does not dwell on basic hoof care, tools, etc. For background information on farrier principals and hoof care enrolment in my other horseshoeing class is recommended. Both classes could be taken simultaneously if needed.
Course Goals
The course goals are as follows:
That students compete the course with a more advanced understanding of hoof and lower leg anatomy and development.
That students have the ability to recognize differing lameness conditions.
That students be able to link treatment and farrier considerations with various lameness conditions.
That students complete this course with a greater understanding of horse care under a relaxed and professional atmosphere.
Course Materials
All written materials for this course are provided. To augment the course materials several websites are referenced that give graphics to help assist the more visual learners. It is therefore recommended that all students have a good internet connection with a graphics card. It may be helpful for some students to have access to a printer. Some students may want to print the lesson materials for easier reading or to collect references for study materials.
Grading Policy
All assignments and tests are graded on completion, accuracy of information, grammar and spelling. Any test or assignment can be re-submitted for a higher grade after consultation with the instructor. For the maximum points pay close attention to the assignment directions and answer all questions in full sentence form.
