Class Syllabus: Theories of Child Development

This course will cover the theories of child development with special focus on cognitive, social and emotional aspects of development.Students will be introduced to the stages of development in children from birth to 12 years old.
The eight lessons will cover: - Introduction to human development.
- Physical development
- Personality and play.
- Cognitive development 1.
- Cognitive development 2.
- Social development.
- Emotional development.
Course Requirements
There are no pre-requirements or previous experience necessary for this course. An interest in and a desire to support the development of children. Students will have completed the course when they have completed each lesson and the quizz/test accompanying the lesson. Students can complete (and are encouraged to complete) the course in no more than ten weeks. Students can work at their own pace. Participation , though not mandatory for the grade to be awarded, is highly recommended and encouraged.
Course Goals
The students will :
-be able to describe the process of development of children from 0-12 yrs old.
- have a knowledge of what is considered normal development and be able to recognize delays or unusual advances in a child's growth.
- be familiar with the major theorists of child development, e.g Freud, Piaget, Erikson.

All the reading material is contained in the lesson content.
Links to websites will be posted to provide additional reading material.
The students do not have to purchase any material.
Grading Policy
The students will be graded on a 100 point system.
They will be awarded certificates-
Certificate of Attendance- for visiting pageson at least five different days.
Academic Excellence- for 70% or better.
Class Participation- at least five messages left on board during course.
Outstanding Achievement- having completed all assignments and lessons.
