Course Description
Being an effective advocate for a child with a disability requires skill and determination. The 6 units that comprise this course contain information that will enable you to advocate effectively for individuals with disabilities, monitor and improve the quality of services that you receive and how you can promote equality in education The lessons cover six instructional units: Unit 1: Overview of Parent Support and Advocacy
Unit 2: Give Me Context: A Brief History of Civil Rights Advocacy in the United States
Unit 3: Know Thyself: Communication Towards Positive Change
Unit 4: Skills for Survival: Documentation and Problem Solving
Unit 5: Knowledge is Power: Where To Get It and How To Use It
Unit 6: Where To Turn: Parent Supports and Self-Advocacy
Course Requirements
Complete all surveys, lessons, assignments, and quizzes and participate in forum discussions.
The course is designed for parents and advcoates who have experience with children and youth with disabilities and are interested in learning how to improve programs and policies affecting these chidlren and youth.
The course consists of 6 lessons, which take approximately 3 weeks to complete given that you complete 2 lessons per week. But you are free to go at your own pace given that you regular progress at that pace.
Course Goals
Goal 1: Know the history of civil rights advocacy in the United States and how it formed the basis of paraent advocacy for children with disabilities.
Goal 2: Develop connumication skills that are effective in promotive positive change.
Goal 3: Develop the advocacy survive skills through effective problem solving and documentation.
Goal 4: Understand that knowledge is Power, where to get that knowledge, and how to use it in powerful ways.
Goal 5: Know where to find supports for self-advocacy.
Reading Materials
No books are required for the course. The lessons provide the content, with appropriate citations and NetLinks.
Grading Policy
There are no grades for completing the course. Instead participants who complete course requirements and participate in lesson discussions will be eligible for certificates of participation and merit.
