Course Description

Are you interested in building your everyday vocabulary? Perhaps you are concerned that your writing or your speaking vocabulary is below average? The purpose of "Vocabulary Building" is to beef up your everyday vocabulary with words that you could use in everyday conversation.   Â

 A strong vocabulary will not only give you the tools to say and write exactly what you mean it can also help you on a job interview, communicate better with a doctor or your lawyer or your boss and certainly help you with school work. A good vocabulary makes you sound smarter, feel more assured and practically guarantees you'll be a better writer and speaker.

The larger our vocabularies the more clearly we can communicate with others and understand what others are trying to communicate to us. This course will introduce some simple ways to learn new vocabulary words by practicing reading in context, by writing sentences using the words and by doing practice exercises and quizzes.

The class is not a beginning or advanced vocabulary course. It's that "in between" course where so many people's vocabulary skills fit. So if you're interested in expanding your vocabulary skills in a self-paced, no stress format where an instructor actually reviews and corrects your sentence writing, why not give it a try?  Enrich your life by enriching your vocabulary.

Course Requirements

There are two requirements for this course:

1. Students should have a middle school to high school reading level. This is not a course for those just beginning to learn English.

2. Students will need a paper dictionary and thesaurus. If you don't own a set , check one out at your local library or buy one at a bookstore or used bookstore.

Course Goals

The course objective is clear- increase your vocabulary by almost 200 words or phrases plus learn how to assimilate new words by learning to read in context. Be able to understand and use the words in a written sentence or in general conversation. Establish a pattern of committing interesting words to memory and feel more comfortable using the new words.

All reading materials are provided in the class lessons and through the NetLinks.

Grading Policy

The course has an Introduction and 10 lessons. There are points for assignments and quizzes and class participation in forums (discussions). A percentage grade will be given based on point accumulation.
